History of the CSIR Ski Club
The CSIR Ski Club, one of Victoria's earliest ski clubs, was formed in 1945 by employees of the 'Council for Scientific and Industrial Research' (CSIR). The Club retained its original name when the CSIR changed its name in 1949 to the 'Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization' (CSIRO). Over time, the membership eligibility was expanded to include non-CSIRO members who have shown an active interest in the club.
A Brief Summary of Key Club Dates
1945 - Mt Buller
The club was formed in 1945 by 59 CSIR employees, as the 'CSIR Skiers and Walkers', and in 1946 commenced building its first lodge at Mt Buller on 'One Tree Hill'. This area was expected to be the site of the Mt Buller village, but even before the lodge was completed it was decided to establish the village further up the mountain around an area known as 'Cow Camp'. This lodge was occupied that same year, completed in subsequent years, and extended in 1965.
1962 - Falls Creek
The club's second lodge was built at Falls Creek in 1962. This 13 bed lodge was pre-fabricated in one of the structural laboratories of the Division of Forest Products in Yarra Bank Rd, South Melbourne (where Crown Casino now stands), transported up to Falls Creek, and assembled on location.
1973 - Mt Hotham
The club purchased the Drift Chalet (following the death of its owner and Mt Hotham identity, Lindsay Salmon). It was then renamed 'The Drift'.
1978 - Falls Creek
A second lodge was built next to the original at Falls Creek, using mainly club labour. This was originally intended to be a 12 bed lodge, but an extra four beds were added late in the design.
1984 - Mt Buller
After years of fruitless negotiation, the club was forced to vacate the 'One Tree Hill' site in 1984, and built a new 30 bed lodge within the established village. This lodge was constructed mainly by professional builders, with club labour used for final fitting out. The location of the original lodge is now the 'CSIR Car Park'.
1991 - Mt Hotham
The Drift was extensively refurbished, and the number of beds expanded to 34.
2012 - Falls Creek
Aurora lodge was purchased and the two Falls Creek lodges were sold.
Present
The club now has over 650 members.
